POLICE JUST GETTING AROUND TO BOX TRUCK RAMPAGE
THE LINCOLN PARK NEWSLETTER: Investigator finds case on her desk a month after thousands of dollars of damage to cars on 10th Street NE.
RECKLESS DRIVING CASE IGNORED FOR A MONTH
Justice delayed: Police officer returns to find case on her desk
By Mark Edwards
10th Street NE
After reaching out to MPD, I received a call from an officer who handles "hit and run" cases. The officer explained that she was on vacation and returned to find the case of the "box truck rampage" on May 23 was just assigned to her.
For those of you who might not remember, on May 23 a white refrigerator box truck hit our car on 10th Street and then dramatically fled in a panic, hitting a few additional cars and peeling the door panels off at least two of the vehicles.
One of the cars damaged in the rampage.
I don't blame the officer but found it extraordinary that it took MPD a month to assign the case to be investigated. Given how the MPD is reportedly down 500 officers, I suppose I shouldn't be surprised.
An email sent to the MPD Press Office by The Lincoln Park Newsletter was not answered.
FYI, I sent the officer the video of the truck from my house camera. (I had sent it to the officer making the initial report, but it didn't make it into the MPD file.)
Screenshot of security camera video.
The screen shot is not great quality, but it appears to show the name of the trucking company as S & H Inc. The detective is also looking to see if any video could be pulled from the city camera at 10th and Constitution NE.
The Lincoln Park Newsletter Investigates
S & H, which also operates under the name Streets Market & Cafe, is located in Washington, District of Columbia, according to Buzzfile, which aggregates company information. S & H primarily operates in the gourmet food stores business / industry within the food stores sector.
The Lincoln Park Newsletter sent emails to Streets Market, which is owned by S & H, and Alex Shin answered, saying,
Hello,
First, sorry to hear that incident.
We never received any incidents from drivers on that day.
But let me check whether our truck was involved in its incident again.
Thank you,
Alex
A few minutes later, Alex followed up:
And let me know who was the driver on that day in DC.
Thanks,
Alex
The Lincoln Park Newsletter replied, “The driver did not stop. So we do not know who the driver was. The police are investigating. I have the officer’s name if you would like it.”
Shin did not reply further.
With locations throughout the District and in Baltimore, Streets Market says, “We deliver same-day to your home,” according to its website. “We are a local grocery store that offers a wide variety of organic, conventional, local, international, and everyday practical goods all under one roof.”
Buzzfile says the firm has been operating for approximately 12 years. S & H is estimated to generate $1.1 million in annual revenues, and employs approximately 10 people at this single location, according to Buzzfile.
Why fireworks are illegal

Dozens of Residents’ Apartments Leveled by Fire Ignited by Roman Candles
Illegal fireworks caused a Southeast D.C. apartment fire that gutted the homes of more than six dozen people and sent them scrambling to find a place to live, investigators told WTOP.
Seventy-six people were displaced in the fire Tuesday afternoon at the Oxford Manor Apartments in the 2600 block of Bowen Road.
Young people shooting off Roman candles on a balcony caused the massive blaze that tore through a D.C. apartment building, authorities say. “We all enjoy fireworks, but many of us do not realize how dangerous they can be,” D.C. Fire and EMS Chief John A. Donnelly Sr. said in a statement.
Fireworks that fly, explode or move are illegal in D.C. Those using or selling illegal fireworks face a fine of up to $2,000 or arrest.
“This is a terrible tragedy for the residents whose lives have been disrupted because someone else was not safe with fireworks,” Donnelly said.

Re-dedication of Bethune in July

Annual Bethune Birthday Celebration
The 50th anniversary of the unveiling of the Mary McLeod Bethune Statue in Lincoln Park will be remembered at events beginning at 3:30 p.m. on July 13 .
The National Council of Negro Women, which Mrs. Bethune founded, raised the funds for the monument — the first to honor a Black woman in a public park in Washington, D.C.
Park rangers plan to lead tours, hands-on activities and show exhibits, followed by:
Music by DC Strings - 5:00 p.m.
"Meet Mrs. Bethune" - 6:00 p.m.
as performed by actor Leslie Jones
Music by the Tribe Band - 7:00 p.m.
The statue of Mrs. Bethune is made out of brass and shows three people, Bethune and two children. Mrs. Bethune is depicted holding a cane in her right hand given to her by President Roosevelt, according to a Reading is Fundamental study guide. She holds a scroll in her other hand that depicts her legacy. Bethune’s legacy is education — she wanted every Black child to have an education. That’s why Bethune is passing a scroll to the Black boy and Black girl.
From the Library of Congress: L'Enfant designated a large park one mile east of the U.S. Capitol at the convergence of four avenues. Set aside as a large rectangle on the Ellicott Plan, it has been landscaped as a park since the 1870s, and has become significant for its association with black history and the African-American Civil Rights Movement. It is located within National Register's Capitol Hill Historic District. The Emancipation Statue, which depicts Abraham Lincoln freeing a slave, is one of the Civil War Monuments in Washington, D.C., on the National Register of Historic Places.

All subscribers to The Lincoln Park Newsletter become automatic members of FRIENDS OF CAPITOL HILL PARKS, the largest volunteer charitable organization serving Lincoln Park, Washington, DC, Mary Farran, president, chairwoman, CEO and Lincoln Park mayor-for-life.
Friends of Capitol Hill Parks aka PLANTS is Lincoln Park’s largest charitable organization and conducts its activities in coordination with the National Park Service, which controls and manages Lincoln Park. PLANTS’ partnership with NPS began in 2017, making it the oldest Friends group serving Lincoln Park. We accept no money so we are not required to be a 501(c)(3) organization. That way you also don’t have to worry about lack of accountability and wonder where your money goes. There is no overhead. All contributions are in-kind — flowers and plants purchased by members and service hours.
Member requirements are simple: Be nice to the park and nice to each other. Pick up trash when you see it and pick up after yourself, your child and your pet. Call the Park Service or Park Police if you see a problem.
If you do not want to be a free member of FRIENDS OF CAPITOL HILL PARKS, you can resign and subscribe to the newsletter and be a non-member subscriber by signing up for a very expensive, exclusive, premium over-priced pay subscription. Dogecoin is accepted. In truth, the newsletter does not really accept any money. Which is another way of saying you are not allowed to give cash to the group.
We also hold no raffles because that would require, under DC law, getting a permit. Really. What a pain. It is a violation to do so without a permit.
