Police identified the man who was shot and killed Tuesday night. He is 25-year-old Marcellus Smith of Southeast, DC, police said in its first news release on the homicide.
The news release contained a major factual error.
It states, “Upon arrival, officers located one adult male victim suffering from a gunshot wound. DC Fire and EMS transported the victim to an area hospital, where after all lifesaving measures failed, he was pronounced dead.”
That’s not accurate.
Smith died on the sidewalk in front of 1209 East Capitol Street SE.
Lincoln Park Newsletter, neighbors and witnesses saw the paramedics put a blanket over the body, where it remained for hours until the coroner came to take the body for an autopsy.
The shooting occurred on the south side of Lincoln Park at Kentucky Avenue at 10:08 p.m., police said.
MPD and the US Park Police responded to 1209 East Capitol St. SE to the report of gunshots.
Neighbors who arrived at the park reported hearing a volley of rapid-fire of about 10 gunshots around 10 p.m.
Residents on the north side of Lincoln Park reported seeing a red, four-wheel all-terrain vehicle fleeing the scene westbound on East Capitol Street from 11th Street.
About two dozen police cars and an ambulance responded to the scene. A group of witnesses to the crime were interviewed by police on Kentucky Avenue. One included a woman in a glittery nightgown.
EMT technicians could be seen putting a pink blanket over the body of the victim on the sidewalk in front of 1209 East Capitol Street after apparently declaring him dead.
A large area on the south side of the park was cordoned off as police officers looked for shell casing.
The eastbound section of the 1200 block of East Capitol St. SE, on the south side of Lincoln Park, was closed to traffic for about 12 hours.
