HUNDREDS ATTEND MARY MCLEOD BETHUNE SESQUICENTENNIAL
By Tommy Woodward
HUNDREDS ATTENDED the 150th anniversary of the birth of Mary McLeod Bethune, founder of the National Council of Negro Women and beloved humanitarian, educator, presidential advisor and civil rights leader.
The celebration on Saturday is held annually by the National Park Service with the NCNW at Lincoln Park, where a statue of the pioneering civil rights leader sits opposite the first statue of Abraham Lincoln in the District of Columbia.
This year, the celebration took place in the wake of the shocking departure of National Park Service Superintendent Tara Morrison, who oversaw Lincoln Park and other historic sites in the National Capital Parks-East region. At the end of June, Morrison left her role as chief of federal parks in the eastern part of the District of Columbia and parts of southern Maryland after eight and a half years.
Bethune was born on July 10, 1875 in Mayesville, South Carolina. Last year, the National Park Service held an event to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Lincoln Park memorial in her honor.
LETTER TO THE EDITOR
For the record, the illegal fireworks on July 4 may please onlookers but they most definitely do not please those of us with houses on the park, especially dog owners. I have given up expecting police to do anything about it, but this dangerous annual event is a thorn in the side of many of us.

Child Dies From Injuries By Fireworks During Fourth of July Celebration
News Release
Buena Park, CA — On July 4, 2025, at 9:45 pm, Buena Park Police officers observed family members frantically carrying a child into a residence.
Officers immediately stopped to assist and discovered a young girl suffered critical injuries, consistent with a fireworks-related explosion.
Officers quickly began life-saving efforts for an 8-year-old female child. The child was transported to the University of California, Irvine (UCI) hospital, where she was pronounced deceased.
Through initial investigation, a large illegal fireworks display, which was placed in the street by the homeowner, failed and began misfiring toward the residence where the child was. This caused other illegal fireworks to ignite, which were near the child and others.
At some point, the child had been struck, causing fatal injuries. Several other individuals were present, but no significant other injuries were reported.
The Buena Park Police Department is working in collaboration with Orange County Fire Authority investigators and the Orange County Sheriff’s Bomb Squad. A large number of fireworks that detonated were illegal, per the investigation and assistance from both the Fire investigators and Bomb Squad.
The homeowner was subsequently arrested.
The 8-year-old has since been identified as Jasmine Nguyen of Anaheim, according to reporting by KTLA and ABC7 that cited the Buena Park Police Department and the Orange County Sheriff's Department.
MAN DEAD, WOMAN CRITICALLY INJURED AFTER ILLEGAL FIREWORKS EXPLOSION SETS HOMES ON FIRE IN PACOIMA
PACOIMA, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A man was killed and a woman left in critical condition after a fireworks explosion set multiple homes on fire in Pacoima Thursday night, drawing over 100 firefighters to the scene to battle the flames.
The blaze was reported just after 9 p.m. in the 12900 block of W. Corcoran Street, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.
"This structure fire also was involving a significant amount of fireworks that were being stored there and these fireworks were raining all upon the neighborhood," said David Ortiz, LAFD's public information officer.
The department said three one-story homes were showing fire when LAFD personnel responded, and active fireworks inside a detached garage exposed more homes and brush in the area.
It took more than 100 firefighters to knock down the blaze in 53 minutes, according to LAFD. A fourth home and a car were also damaged in the fire.
The Pacoima explosion came hours after a deadly fireworks explosion earlier in the day in Simi Valley.
