Man Arrested in Brutal Pennsylvania Ave. SE Assault
By The Lincoln Park Newsletter
Police have charged a 39-year-old Congress Heights man with felony assault in connection with the brutal attack of a retired Capitol Hill military veteran who was picking up his prescription at the CVS near Eastern Market.
The violent attack occurred on Sept. 3 in the 600 block of Pennsylvania Ave. SE outside the CVS Pharmacy. The victim’s septum bone was broken and his jaw also was broken in two places. The victim, a philanthropist who recent returned from delivering medical supplies to Haiti, underwent successful surgery on Tuesday to repair the injury.
Coneleonte Marnseles Barrett, of Southeast, DC, was arrested and charged with felony assault with significant bodily injury and arraigned this week. He is being held without bond. Barrett resides at 2709 Robinson Place SE Apt #201 Washington, DC 20020.
On Friday, Barrett waived a probable cause hearing and asked a Superior Court judge to release him to home detention. The judge declined and remanded him to custody. A trial is scheduled for Sept. 25, but it could be continued.
Police solved the crime through resourceful police work, records show.
The victim provided a description of the suspect vehicle and a license number, but it was one digit off, source say.
Video acquired by the police show that, after the attack, the suspect vehicle was driven down Pennsylvania Avenue SE to a second CVS Pharmacy on 12th Street SE. The truck parked in front and the suspect walked into the store, picked up a prescription in his own name, and then returned to the suspect truck.
CVS provided the name of the suspect and his address.
Police matched his name, quality photos and surveillance photos and identified Barrett as a suspect. On Monday, police arrived at his home and handcuffed him when he opened his door.
Barrett asked why he was being arrested, an affidavit said, and police said because of an assault on Pennsylvania Avenue SE the previous week. Barrett then acknowledged the attack on the victim, and said the victim had spit on him first.
Police video contradicts the suspect’s account.
Barrett has an arrest and conviction record that includes an assault with a dangerous weapon in 2013.

By Elizabeth Nelson
Eighty artists and crafters showed their art to thousands of visitors for the Capitol Hill Art Walk on Saturday and Sunday. Pleasant weather fueled the crowds who could be seen strolling through the brick-clad streets looking for art finds.
Artists showed their work at over 40 locations — in homes, studios and yards across the Hill.

Their media of choice was varied: paintings and prints on paper and canvas, collage and mixed media, large and small-scale metal work, mosaics, and hardscaping, ceramics, textiles, jewelry, baskets and soap.

SPOTTED ON THE HILL: Tom Sietsema, Pascual fanboy
On Sunday evening, Washington Post restaurant critic Tom Sietsema dined — for the FIFTH TIME — at Pascual, the Mexican restaurant that Sietsema identified as the best new restaurant in Washington.
Observers tell The Lincoln Park Newsletter that Sietsema started with the Guacamole and Tostadas with salsa macha, verde & habanero, smoked papaya, shishito escabeche, pickled radish and piña.

He also tried the special, the blowfish “wings,” tempura-fried tails of puffer fish known for their firm but tender white meat.
Sietsema sampled the Poblano Relleno, a take on the classic chile relleno, a poblano chile pepper filled with Maryland crab, sikil pak and purslane.
His entree was the Smoked Half Chicken. The bird is roasted over logs of post oak and accompanied by fried rice, salsa morita and spring onions.
